The Salvation Army Continues Provide Humanitarian Aid to Over 14.6 Million People as Ukraine Conflict Begins Third Year
Physical, emotional, and spiritual aid being provided to those most affected by crisis
ALEXANDRIA, VA (FEBRUARY 23, 2024) – As people in Ukraine and surrounding countries continue to navigate the devastation of the February 24, 2022 Russian invasion and ongoing conflict, The Salvation Army remains committed to providing aid and support to affected individuals and families. Today, two years after the initial invasion, The Salvation Army reflects on the significant impact made on the lives of countless individuals and communities and prepares to serve as long as there is a need.
Since the onset of the crisis, The Salvation Army World Service Office (SAWSO) has been steadfast in representing the interests of The Salvation Army U.S.A. and has mobilized its global response network to help the millions of people in need. To date, there are 3.7 million people internally displaced in Ukraine, 6.4 million global refugees, and 14.6 million people in need of humanitarian assistance across Europe. SAWSO has worked tirelessly to improve the health, economic, and spiritual conditions of the vulnerable populations in the region since the conflict began and is committed to doing so long after the crisis is over.

Since February 24, 2022, The Salvation Army has provided food, water, and other supplies to particularly vulnerable groups such as the elderly, people with disabilities who may be unable to flee from high-risk areas, women, and children. Services and other supplies provided to those afflicted in Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Czech Republic, and Georgia include:
- 3.7 million cooked meals
- 127,294 food parcels
- 253,376 food vouchers
- 164,700 non-food items
- 89,283 hygiene kits
- 43,880 anti-human trafficking awareness sessions and educational materials
- 1.6 million nights of shelter
- Emotional and spiritual care for 27,831 individuals
