Commissioner Ken Hodder: Finding God in Disaster
Sometimes when bad things happen in our lives, we ask God why? Why did God let this tornado destroy my home? Why did He let this rain bear down and flood our community?
It’s scary to watch the news and see a big natural disaster headed in your direction. But as you follow the steps to prepare yourself and your family physically for emergencies, and yes, even in the midst of the storm, hold onto your faith.
As I read the Bible, there are many verses that warn and prepare us for challenges in our lives. It’s in these challenging moments that we seek out God, and he has assured us that he will be there. Because of His goodness there is hope, no matter how fierce the storm at our doorstep. We have someone who walks with us, both through the flood and the mud of life.
Psalm 46 tells us God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea. Be still and know that I am God.
Knowing this, and focusing our eyes to Christ, can steel us against the foreseen and unforeseen challenges we each are sure to encounter. Thus, our spiritual preparation can be just as important as our physical preparation for storms, earthquakes, droughts, pandemics, and more, be they physical, spiritual, or emotional. And so I say, continue to pray.
(Philippians 4:6-8) Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
He is the author and finisher of our faith. He has your soul in mind in every thought. Be assured that before, during, and after a disaster The Salvation Army will be there to help. We bring food and other essentials, as well as emotional and spiritual support through volunteers who are ready to listen and pray with and for you.
This is the work God has put on our hearts to accomplish. Our mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
(Romans 8:28-29) And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
As you do the necessary work, your faith can become a shield of strength, and shelter in times of hardship and distress. Let Him be your shelter and let Him be your strength in whatever challenges come your way. For this, I pray.
